559 Locations Across Jakarta Join Massive Simultaneous Planting of Non-Rice Crops

The Jakarta government has officially launched the "Simultaneous Planting Movement for Non-Rice Food Crops" at SMKN 63 Jakarta Nursery in Cipedak, South Jakarta. This massive city-wide initiative is being conducted across 559 different locations throughout the capital.

The inauguration at the SMKN 63 Jakarta Nursery was led directly by Jakarta Family Welfare Movement (TP PKK) Chairwoman, Hani Pramono, alongside Vice Chairperson Dewi Rano.

Jakarta Food Security, Marine, and Agriculture Agency (KPKP) Head, Hasudungan A. Sidabalok, stated that the initiative—themed Non-Rice Food Crop Planting Movement for Family Food Security—was organized as an effort to achieve family-level food resilience in Jakarta.

"The planting activity involved various elements of society, including regional leaders, civil servants (ASN), Jakarta residents, PKK members, farmer groups, and urban farming communities across all areas of Jakarta," he expressed, Monday (8/31).

The event saw over 1,000 participants take part across 559 locations city-wide. SMKN 63 Jakarta was selected as the central launch point due to its status as a benchmark for the Living Laboratory Urban Farming School.

As a dedicated agricultural vocational school, SMKN 63 offers a hands-on environment where students go beyond textbooks to experiment with and refine farming models suitable for city life.

"We're planting a diverse range of crops, from sweet potatoes and cassava to breadfruit, bananas, corn, and konjac, as well as a variety of fruit trees," Sidabalok added.

He emphasized that the movement must be a long-term endeavor to support economic progress and Jakarta's vision of being a green, healthy, and globally competitive city.

"We commend the vibrant participation of the community and officials. This collective responsibility is key to securing Jakarta’s food self-sufficiency, as directed by City Secretary Instruction No. 40/2026," he concluded.

South Jakarta TP PKK Chairwoman, Azizah Syafrin, hopes the movement inspires residents to diversify their food sources and utilize home-side land more productively to bolster family food security.

"We urge everyone to continue these planting efforts. As PKK is close to the grassroots, we must monitor these crops to ensure they grow well and yield results for the community," she stated.

Azizah commended the synergy and shared spirit that drove the success of the city-wide planting initiative. She highlighted that building a resilient food system is a shared mission that depends on the contribution of every citizen.

"We truly appreciate the solidarity we have built together. We firmly believe that food security is not something we can accomplish alone; it requires a unified front," she stated.
